Travel and Workshops
Filed Under Photo Ops | Leave a Comment
I recieved this e-mail, which covers a couple different topics:
“I would like to let you and your photography club know about a new workshop that might interest your members. It’s a one-of-a-kind tour that combines adventure travel in China with a workshop on travel photography. Professional photographer and creator of this tour, Ewen Bell, is also available to speak with your members and perform a webinar for one of your upcoming club meetings.
This tour is a rare opportunity to learn advanced photographic techniques in an active travel environment. More information on the trip is below and is also available at www.ewenbell.com/workshops.
Ewen Bell is available to speak to your club directly to answer questions on general photography, digital photography, and on the trip itself.
Ewen can also meet with your club through an interactive WEBINAR. This could be a great event for one of your regular club meetings –a chance to speak to a working professional travel photographer, view his work, talk about his upcoming trips, and ask any questions your members may have.
To schedule a webinar for your club or find out more information on the trip, you can contact Ewen directly at ewen@ewenbell.com or +61 438 896 228 (dial 011 first in the US), or feel free to contact me here in the US.
You can also check out Ewen’s new podcast about the trip at www.ewenbell.com/workshops as well.
Best regards,

EXPERIENCE CHINA AS A TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER!
Expert travel photographer Ewen Bell and adventure travel operator, Jason Williams have joined forces to offer the experience of a lifetime - a travel photography workshop that delves deep into the cultural, scenic and human richness of China and teaches you how to capture the photographs of a lifetime.
Anyone who has dreamt of learning how travel photographers capture their evocative images can now enjoy an adventure travel experience that will take you up close to the people and culture that makes such powerful images possible.
“The trip is designed to be intensely rewarding as far as your photographic skills are concerned, but also as a life experience. Using our combined knowledge we have created an itinerary that allows more time in each place to explore and begin to understand people and their culture. Spending time establishing a real connection with another person or place is the key to capturing those unique moments which really bring an image to life,†said Ewen.
The China 15 day workshop starts 25 March in Beijing. The trip itinerary includes major sights such as the famed Terracotta Warriors and the Great Wall of China, but there is also plenty of time for more hidden treasures such as agricultural villages, rice terraces, night markets and the old town of Shanghai.
“China offers a genuine experience where even the big cities are filled with distinct cultural enclaves, preserved traditions and ancient historical connections. Once you get out into the rural areas it’s possible to leave the world behind you and let an alternate way of life engulf you,†he said.
Photographic instruction starts from day one and aims to redefine the way each participant looks and thinks about photography. It is a chance to be immersed in a unique “hands-on†photographic workshop that offers not only technical expertise, but also an incredible opportunity to practice what you are learning as you go.
“This tour has been developed with an understanding of the special needs of photographic study and as tour leader, Jason will draw on his extensive experience to make this trip one that you will remember for a lifetime,†said Ewen.
The workshops are open to anyone who has an interest in photography and participants can work at their own level. Each shoot is followed by discussion and sharing of results and experiences. The workshops are presented as themes that cover topics such as capturing intimacy and expression, using available light for dramatic effect, capturing a sense of motion and shooting for context.
Trip costs US $1,900 excluding airfares and spending money.
China Workshop departs Beijing 25 March; concludes in Hong Kong on 8 April 2006.
Further workshops in 2006 are scheduled for May 13, Sep 2 and Nov 4.

Get Your Photos in a Magazine
Filed Under Photo Contests | Leave a Comment
I buy the occassional issue of Writer’s Journal magazine. It always has a full-color, full-sized photo on the front. Frankly, the photos are a bit amateurish. Looking through an issue the other day, I realized that they have an ongoing contest for cover photo submissions. Any club member who would like an actual magazine credit, go ahead and view their guidelines. The subject matter seems to be wide open, although several issues I’ve seen feature nature shots.
I think every club member has produced photos quite capable of making the cover, so I encourage everyone to enter!
If you want to view an issue of the magazine, the Barnes and Noble in Gilroy carries it in the magazine section, near the photo and art magazines.

California and Alaska Photo Cruises

From an e-mail I recieved:
“Baja and Alaska are great places to photograph wildlife. Our boat captains
and naturalists know where to find animals and how to get close to them for
great photos in their natural habitat.
Motor through a sea of dolphins and pet a mother whale and her baby in Baja.
Thrill at bears catching salmon, whales bubble-net feeding, and orcas
bringing down their prey in Alaska. Enjoy wondrous landscapes, sunrises and
sunsets in these two magical and very opposite places.
Baja is so popular, we added a fourth trip for the 2006 season. This
additional trip runs the evening of March 26 from San Diego through
breakfast April 6 in Los Cabos, on 95-foot motor-yacht Searcher. The cost is
$3125.
In Alaska we offer 5 to 10 day trips from June to October on 50-foot
motor-yacht Delphinus. Trips run to and from various towns in Alaska. A
limited passenger list allows us special access to environmentally protected
areas. Prices range from $2795 to $3895.
Visit us on the Web at www.dolphincharters.com.
Call 800-472-9942 or e-mail trips@dolphincharters.com for more information.
Bon Voyage!

I recieved this e-mail, which is really great news for anyone needing to do some photo research:
“The Los Angeles County Museum of Art would like to let you know about our
over 7,300 high resolution images of photographic works of art from our
collection which can be viewed free of charge on LACMA’s website
(http://collectionsonline.lacma.org/). The images range from California landscapes to Pictoralist photos, and include such highlights as Roth Artist Portraits and the work of Edward Weston, in addition to images from Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Cindy
Sherman, all with descriptions included. Many of these pieces have never
been exhibited or published before. The images can be downloaded, printed,
e-mailed, or compared and contrasted with one another using the site’s
unique “Image Viewer.” We will continue to add images and information to
the database and encourage you to re-visit LACMA’s Collections Online
website periodically.
